Arlington School Board Adopts Snow Day Make Up Plan

The Arlington county school board voted to adopt Phase I of the school makeup plan which makes up enough days for the school missed through February 16th.  The plan begins March 1st and includes eliminating days off for parent teacher conferences March 4th and 5th, eliminating the teacher work day April 5th, and eliminating early release Wednesdays in the elementary schools.  For the complete details visit this link.

New Website from National Association of Realtors Offers Help for Homeowners

The National Association of Realtors announced the launching of its new consumer based website this week,, a free source of information and tools that can help you make smart and timely decisions about your home.

According to NAR’s press release, the free Web site helps homeowners plan and organize their home projects and provides timely articles and news; home improvement advice and how-to’s; and information about taxes, home finances and insurance.

“Unlike other homeownership Web sites, HouseLogic helps consumers view their home through a financial lens and make smart, informed home improvement investment decisions,” said NAR President Vicki Cox Golder. “Families can set goals for saving money on their home or increasing its value, and easily track the progress they are making on those goals.”

Arlington County Public Schools Propose Snow Day Make-Up Plan

Arlington County Public School superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy has made a proposal to make up the snow days students missed during our recent snowfalls.  Phase I of the proposal will provide enough makeup days for the days missed through February 16th.

Sledding Allowed on Capitol Hill this weekend

According to local news sources, Senator Chris Dodd requested and received a waiver on the ban on sledding on the hill at the Capitol for the President’s Day weekend.

Historic Garden Week in North Arlington April 20

The Garden Club of Virginia and the Garden Club of Fairfax will hold their annual house and garden tour in North Arlington on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 from 10 am to 4 pm.  Information about how to obtain tickets and what homes will be on the tour can be found at the Virginia Garden Week website.  Other tours are available around the state during the 77th Annual Historic Garden Week from April 17th to April 25th.  A complete schedule can be found here.

Looking for things to do while you are snowed in?  Arlington has developed a new web page to give you ideas of fun things you can do and make learning fun.  Weigh a snowball, keep a snow journal, write math problems in the snow, describe how to sled to someone in Uganda.  Check out the new Snow Learning Page.

Update for Tue, Feb. 9: All Arlington Public Schools will be closed on Tue, Feb. 9. Offices will be open and 12-month employees may take unscheduled leave. Essential personnel are to report to work. The W-L pool will open at 11:30 a.m. All other pools will be closed. Extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, adult and community education classes, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled. For updates about Arlington County operations go to
