#207 – Come cheer on the runners in the Marine Corps Marathon

The  annual Marine Corps Marathon is typically held the last Sunday in October.  For 2014, it will be Sunday, October 26th.  Come out and cheer them on as they run through Arlington and Washington, DC.  There are five locations recommended for spectators.  You can pick up a course map at the MCM Health & Fitness Expo by GE at the Walter Washington Convention Center between 9 and 7 on Saturday or at the information tents on race day.

Opening ceremonies will be held at the MCM Start Line on Route 110 in Arlington accessible on Metro’s blue/orange line at the Rosslyn or Pentagon Station.  Metro will open at 5 AM and the race begins at 7:55 AM.  After the start you can cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln Memorial in DC where you’ll be able to see runners at mile 11 and mile 16. If you head east on Constitution Avenue, past the Washington Monument to  the National Mall you will be in a good position to see the runners at miles 18 and 19.  From there take the Metro via the Smithsonian station and head back into Virginia on the Blue or Yellow line to Crystal City where you can see the runners at miles 22 and 23. There will also be live music and family activities. At the finish line near the Marine Corps War Memorial there will be bleacher seating.  Take Metro’s blue line to Rosslyn or the MCM shuttle from 23rd Street in Crystal City.

The Marine Corps Marathon Finish Festival will be held in Rosslyn from 8 to 4 PM with a family link up area,  music, food samplings and a beer garden.

#206 – Celebrate Halloween a day early.

Come to Westover Village for their Halloween Celebration from 2-6 on October 30th, 2010.  Highlights include a toddlers’ costume parade, Mr. Don, a moon bounce, tattoos, and story time at the Westover Library. And from 5-7, kids can trick-or-treat at Ballston Common Mall. Stop by the food court for a free goodie bag.

Yorktown High School Open House

The Arlington community is invited to attend an open house at Yorktown High School on Saturday, October 30th, 2010 from 1-3 p.m.  The open house is a celebration of the completion of Phase I of the capital improvement project.   There will be performances by the Yorktown dance team, cheerleaders and musicians on the school’s front plaza.  Visitors will be able to tour the new technology-enhanced classrooms, art studios, laboratories, cafeteria, family and consumer science lab, TV studio and performing arts spaces.

Alumni of the school are also encouraged to attend and should stop by Room 222 for alumni activities.

#205 – Visit a Haunted House

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is holding a Haunted House fundraiser at Madison Community Center at 3829 N. Stafford St.  They will be telling ghostly tales, playing ghoulish games and giving out Halloween treats.  Two dates have been set with a different age recommendation for each.  The dates for 2010 are

Friday, October 29th
Time: 5-9PM
Recommended for ages 5 to 10 years old

Saturday, October 30th
Time: 7-11PM
Recommended for ages 11 & up

Admission is $5 per person of $15 for a family of four and $20 for a family of five.

#204 – Take your dog trick or treating

Fur-Get-Me Not, nominated for an ABBIE award for “Best Places to Care for your Pet”, is teaming up with Dogma Bakery to host a trick or treat night at the Dogma store in Shirlington Village. Prizes will be awarded for best costume. The event will be held October 29th, 2010 from 6:30 to 9:30.

AAH is holding a San Gala

Arlington Academy of Hope is holding their annual gala and silent auction to provide hope for Ugandan children.  The event will raise funds to support the AAH model primary school, secondary scholarship program, outreach to village schools and two medical clinics.  The SanGala will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 PM on October 29th, 2010 at the Capital View Ballroom at the Key Bridge Marriott.

#203 – Check out Rustico Restaurant in Ballston

Described as the “quintessential neighborhood pub”, the Arlington location of Rustico is located at 4075 Wilson Blvd. near the intersection with Randolph Street.  The menu features seasonal, hearty American fare from a wood-fired oven and grill, including pizzas and rotisserie meats.  Washington City Paper called the Alexandria location one of the 50 best restaurants in DC.  Enhanced by Zemanta

#201 – Take a class at The Fitness Break

Located in the Westover area in Arlington,The  Fitness Break has been nominated for an ABBIE award for “Best Place to Try Something New.” Free introductory classes are available on a drop-in basis and a new eight week session is beginning November 1st. A variety of classes for women are offered including Pilates Mat, Weekend Workout, Women on Weights (WOW), Zumba, Boot Camp, High Intensity Training among others.
