Visit Potomac Overlook Park and Nature Center
Potomac Overlook Regional Park at 2845 N. Marcey Road is one of North Arlington’s most rewarding natural retreats — a 70-acre parcel of mature Potomac Palisades woodland that manages to feel genuinely remote despite sitting squarely in one of the most densely populated counties in America. A fair warning before you go: despite its name, the river views that once defined this hilltop have long since been swallowed by the tree canopy — but what you gain in their place is arguably better. The trails here are quiet, well-shaded, and richly layered with the kind of natural detail that rewards slow walking. Just under two miles of woodland paths wind through the park, connecting via the adjacent Donaldson Run Park to the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail and ultimately to the river itself — making it possible to hike all the way to the Potomac’s edge without leaving the trail system. The park is free and open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk.
The James I. Mayer Center for Environmental Education — the park’s nature center — is the beating heart of the experience and well worth a visit in its own right. Inside, brand-new “Energerium” exhibits make energy science accessible and hands-on for visitors of all ages, alongside natural history displays and live animal exhibits. In partnership with the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia, the nature center cares for several non-releasable birds of prey including a red-tailed hawk, a barred owl, and a great-horned owl — the kind of close-up wildlife encounter that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in the county. Outside, demonstration gardens maintained by the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists and the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia showcase native plants, pollinator species, and an organic vegetable garden that hosts school trips throughout the year. The summer Camp Overlook program for ages 5–15 blends live animal interactions, nature hikes, survival skills, and field trips into one of the most immersive outdoor camp experiences in the region. For homeschool families, the park naturalist team offers tailored programs on request year-round. The Nature Center is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 PM.
