Watch Arlington’s High School Marching Bands Compete and Perform
Every fall, the football fields of Arlington’s high schools become stages for something genuinely spectacular: the marching band season, when Washington-Liberty, Yorktown, and Wakefield each field competitive marching ensembles that perform at Friday night home games and travel to regional and state competitions throughout September and October. The W-L Marching Band plays at Friday night home football games and two or three major competitions during the marching season, with the last competition of the season typically being the Virginia State Marching Festival sponsored by VBODA, where marching bands from across Virginia perform for a rating. All performances are open to the public, and the band programs actively encourage community attendance as a way of motivating student performers. For spectators new to marching band, the combination of choreography, live music, color guard flag work, and precision drill executed at football-field scale is genuinely more impressive in person than any description prepares you for.
Each fall, an APS Marching Band Showcase brings all three Arlington high school marching bands together for a single evening performance — typically held in late October at Wakefield High School — where each band performs their full competitive show in sequence, giving the community a chance to see all three programs on the same evening. The Showcase starts around 7 p.m. and runs approximately two hours; parking can be limited so arriving early is recommended. Beyond the Showcase, individual band competition schedules are posted on each school’s band website — yorktownband.org, and the W-L and Wakefield band pages via apsva.us — where you can find dates for regional competitions that are also open to public spectators. The season culminates in November, with the VBODA State Assessment providing a final competitive benchmark. No tickets required for most community performances; check individual band websites for any admission fees at invitational competitions.
