Go Mall Walking

Mall walking has a reputation problem it doesn’t deserve. Dismiss it as a retiree’s compromise and you miss the point entirely: it’s a free, weather-proof, socially connected form of daily movement that thousands of Arlington-area residents have made the cornerstone of their fitness routines — and Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is where it happens. The Walk-Fit Mall Walking Program, organized by Virginia Hospital Center, is held every Tuesday and Thursday at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City before regular mall hours, when the corridors are clear and the environment is quiet and cool. Participants walk at their own pace, meet neighbors, track their mileage, and enjoy the benefits of consistent daily movement without the hazards of traffic, weather extremes, or uneven terrain. For seniors, those recovering from illness or surgery, people with joint issues, or anyone who simply prefers a safe and social walking environment, the program offers something genuinely valuable.
The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City itself — with its four levels, anchor department stores, and long corridor loops — provides plenty of distance options for walkers of every fitness level. The mall is directly connected to the Pentagon City Metro station on the Blue and Yellow lines, making it accessible without a car. After the walk, the surrounding National Landing neighborhood offers excellent breakfast and coffee options including Good Company Doughnuts & Cafe and Lebanese Taverna, making the outing an easy morning ritual with a built-in social payoff. For those who prefer independent mall walking outside of the organized program, the mall opens to walkers before retail hours on weekdays. You can also walk at Ballston Quarter.
