Come to the Glencarlyn Spring Celebration

Glencarlyn Spring Celebration and Plant Sale

Every April, one of Arlington’s most beloved green spaces bursts into full bloom β€” and throws a party to celebrate. The annual Spring Celebration and Plant Sale at the Glencarlyn Library Community Garden is a rite of passage for Arlington gardeners, nature lovers, and families looking for a beautiful, meaningful way to spend a spring Saturday.

Mark your calendar: this year’s event is happening on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10am to 3pm at the Glencarlyn Library Community Garden, 300 South Kensington Street, Arlington, VA 22204. Visit the Glencarlyn demo garden website for more information or for future dates.

What Is the Glencarlyn Library Community Garden?

The Glencarlyn Library Community Garden began as a Boy Scout Eagle project in the early 1990s. By 1999, the garden had fallen into disarray when two longtime Glencarlyn residents who trained as Extension Master Gardeners rejuvenated it. It was recognized as a Virginia Cooperative Extension demonstration garden in 2004 and has since become a teaching garden and gathering space for the community.

Today it’s so much more than a pretty patch of plants. The garden has earned recognition as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation and certification as an official Monarch Waystation by MonarchWatch.org β€” two honors that reflect just how thoughtfully and purposefully this space has been cultivated over the decades. In partnership with the library, the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia maintain the garden to provide resources for Arlington residents to learn how to create gardens in both suburban and urban landscapes.

What to Expect at the Spring Sale

This isn’t your average plant fair. The Spring Celebration is part garden sale, part community festival β€” and there’s something for everyone.

🌿 Native Plants & Garden Treasures

Event offerings include native plants from Hill House Nursery and plants propagated directly from the Library Garden. If you’ve been wanting to add more native species to your yard to support pollinators and local wildlife, this is the place to shop. Other items for sale include handmade pottery, jewelry, recycled bags, decorated boxes, pre-loved gardening books and items, T-shirts, and used books from the Friends of Arlington Libraries.

🌳 Free Saplings & Family Activities

An educational tree walk starts at 1 p.m., and the Small Trees Make Big Canopies program will be giving away saplings during the event. Β That’s right β€” you can walk away with a free tree. Families can also participate in crafts fmaking this a genuinely fun outing for kids and adults alike.

🏑 Step Inside Arlington’s Oldest Home

Here’s a detail that makes this event truly unique: the Ball-Sellers House β€” the oldest house in Arlington β€” will be open to visitors. At the Ball-Sellers House, you’ll see how colonial gardeners planted vegetables and herbs, learn about how herbs were used historically, see model beehives, and tour a modern rain garden at work β€” all completely free. It’s a rare chance to walk through living history steps from your own neighborhood.

πŸ’š A Good Cause

All proceeds from the sale support the Library Garden and the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia. So every plant you buy helps keep this incredible community resource thriving for years to come.

Pro Tips for First-Timers

  • Arrive early. The best native plant selections go fast, especially popular varieties from Hill House Nursery.
  • Bring cash and a car. You’ll want both β€” it’s easy to leave with more plants than you planned.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The garden and Ball-Sellers House are worth wandering, and you’ll want to take your time.
  • Come hungry to explore. The Glencarlyn neighborhood itself is charming β€” pair your visit with a walk through nearby Glencarlyn Park and Long Branch Nature Area.

Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a curious newcomer who just wants to enjoy Arlington in full spring bloom, the Glencarlyn Spring Celebration is one of those events that reminds you why this community is so special. Don’t miss it.
