When the temperature drops and you’re looking for a genuinely magical winter outing in Arlington, the answer is hiding in plain sight at National Landing. The 7,200 square-foot ice rink at Westpost is the largest outdoor rink in Northern Virginia and the second-largest in the state, with skate rentals and group rates available at 1201 S. Joyce Street. The rink is set within the Westpost plaza, which adds a dual-sided outdoor stone fireplace, surrounding restaurants and shops, and a coffee shop — creating the kind of winter atmosphere that makes a two-hour skate feel like a full evening out. Reservations are highly recommended and are discounted over walk-up rates; sessions run up to two hours and can be booked up to two weeks in advance. Admission runs $10–$13 depending on age and booking method, with skate rentals at $6.

Weekend ice skating lessons are available for kids and adults, along with private instruction — and an indoor skating option exists nearby at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, where the Washington Capitals practice and public skate sessions are available at select times. After skating, the Westpost dining lineup offers excellent recovery fuel: Basic Burger, Lebanese Taverna, Mimi’s Handmade Ice Cream, and Lucky Danger are all steps from the rink, making dinner before or after the session a natural extension of the evening. Birthday parties at the rink include a dedicated host, skate fitting assistance, a 20-minute skating lesson, and reserved table space. The rink is open November through March annually. Reserve at westposticeskating.com or call 703-418-6666.

Too cold to skate outdoors?  Try the MedStar Capitals Iceplex at Ballston for indoor skating instead. Sign up for public skate sessions or take lessons to learn to skate, figure skate or play hockey.
