Enjoy Homemade Pie at Livin’ The Pie Life

Livin’ The Pie Life is one of those rare local businesses that feels like it belongs exactly where it is — a small-batch scratch bakery at 2166 N. Glebe Rd. in North Arlington’s Waverly Hills neighborhood, founded in 2011 by two Arlingtonian moms, Heather Sheire and Wendy MacCallum, who started selling pies at the Clarendon farmers market and quickly sold out of every one they brought. The two women, who met through the Barcroft Elementary School PTA, bake approximately 1,000 pies a week in a historic brick building on Glebe Road — and closer to 5,000 in the two weeks before Thanksgiving, a stretch they call “the Superbowl of pies.” Delish.com named them the Best Pie Shop in Virginia, and a 2017 Sports Illustrated pie contest chose their Southern pumpkin praline as a winner. The bakery is a true scratch operation: all crusts are made by hand, all fillings crafted from seasonal locally sourced ingredients from regional farms. The rotating menu spans both sweet and savory — apple, key lime, salted caramel chocolate chess, buttermilk, and the beloved summer tomato pie (sharp cheddar, sweet onions, fresh basil, and tomato baked to golden-brown bubbling perfection) sit alongside chicken pot pie, ham and Gruyère quiche, and other savory offerings. Pies are sold whole or by the slice; pre-ordering online is strongly recommended as items sell out. Hours are Wednesday–Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.–2 p.m
