Feast at Arlington’s BBQ Spots

Arlington may be better known for its international dining scene, but the county punches well above its weight in barbecue — and three homegrown spots in particular have built devoted followings that put the county on the regional BBQ map. Texas Jack’s Barbecue at 2761 Washington Blvd in Lyon Park (half a mile from the Clarendon Metro) has been Arlington’s rustic-modern BBQ standout since 2015, serving Lone Star-style smoked meats — especially its prized 100-percent prime brisket — alongside creative sides like Mexican street corn, brisket nachos, and brisket egg rolls. The handsome dining room features reclaimed wood, antiqued brick, and hand-forged metal fixtures, and the bar offers local craft beers, whiskey, and creative cocktails. Weekend brunch is served 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

Rocklands Barbeque and Grilling Company at 3471 Washington Blvd — Arlington’s hometown BBQ since 2007 — uses only red oak and hickory wood, never gas or electricity, to smoke its ribs, chicken, pulled pork, and brisket. A three-time Arlington Magazine “Best BBQ” winner and recipient of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Sustainability Award (it runs a solar roof), Rocklands features a celebrated outdoor mural, a spacious patio, and happy hour at the bar. Meanwhile, Sloppy Mama’s BBQ at 5731 Langston Blvd brings a scrappier, counter-service approach to 100-percent wood-fired BBQ — smokers visible out front, picnic tables inside, and a menu built around tender brisket, pulled pork by the pound, half racks of ribs, fried chicken sandwiches, collard greens, zesty mac and cheese, and banana pudding. Three styles, three neighborhoods, one very happy Arlington stomach.
