Exercise on the Outdoor Fitness Stations & Parcourses

Shirlington Park Parcours

Arlington’s trail network and parks are threaded with an impressive collection of outdoor fitness stations and parcourses — free, open-air gyms that reward those willing to explore a little. The Shirlington Park Parcourse, which runs along the Four Mile Run Trail in the lush 11.5-acre park, is perhaps the best-known stop, featuring pull-up bars, push-up stations, and sit-up benches set against the backdrop of a winding stream and the nearby dog park. It’s the kind of spot where a morning run can organically evolve into a full bodyweight workout without a membership fee in sight.

The Crystal City Workout Park at 26th Street and Crystal Drive is a gymnast-style outdoor fitness destination with overhead bars and rings for serious upper-body work, while Thomas Jefferson Park offers a half-mile trail flanked by an adult jungle gym and pull-up bars just behind the TJ Community Center. Additional fitness stations dot the Four Mile Run Trail further west — including chest press machines, hand bikes, and inclined crunch benches accessible from both the Four Mile Run and W&OD trails. Rocky Run Park near Clarendon rounds out the roster with a massive modern climbing structure beloved by fitness-minded adults and kids alike. Together, these spots make a compelling case for turning a trail run into a full outdoor circuit training session.
