Governor Bob McDonnell and the State Board of Education announced this week that three Arlington elementary schools received the 2011 Governor’s Award of Educational Excellence including Arlington Science Focus, Arlington Traditional School and Nottingham Elementary. These three schools met all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieved applicable excellence goals for elementary reading, enrollment in Algebra I by grade 8, enrollment in college-level courses, high school graduation, attainment of advanced diplomas, increased attainment of career and industry certifications, and participated in the Virginia Preschool Initiative.
In addition, six Arlington elementary schools have earned 2011 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards, which promotes advanced learning and achievement. These schools include Ashawn Elementary, Glebe Elementary, Jamestown Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Taylor Elementary and Tuckahoe Elementary. Campbell Elementary received the 2011 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award.
