Arlington County Public Schools Calendar 2011-2012

Most Arlington County Public School students will start back to school Tuesday, September 6th, 2011. Barcroft Elementary which is a year round school has already begun classes. Elementary School students will get a five day weekend October 6th-10th with parent teacher conferences on the 6th and 7th and the Columbus Day Holiday on the 10th (middle schoolers have Friday the 6th and the 10th off while high schoolers just have the 10th). Winter Break runs from December 23rd through January 2nd with students returning to class on January 3rd. Spring Break begins the weekend of March 31st and runs through Monday, April 9th unless Monday is needed as a make-up day.

Celebrate DC Restaurant Week 2011

August 15th-21st, 2011 is DC Restaurant Week and the following Arlington restaurants as well as many others in the area are offering three course dinners for $35.11 and three course lunches (some locations) for $20.11. Visit Open Table for reservations or to see more participating restaurants.

Beat the Heat at Mimi’s Homemade Ice Cream

Mimi’s Homemade Ice Cream, named one of the best from Northern Virginia magazine, is located at 1201 S. Joyce Street in Arlington Westpost (formerly Pentagon Row). They offer over 40 flavors of all natural ice cream as well as sherbet, sorbets, milkshakes, floats, cakes, pies and other delights.

Fire Station No. 3 opens

Arlington County has announced that Fire Dept. No. 3 in Cherrydale opened today, July 26th, 2011. The public is invited to a dedication ceremony on Friday July 29th at 2PM where they will have a ceremonial uncoupling of a fire house (serving as a “ribbon-cutting”) and a community open house on Saturday, July 30th from 10-2. when visitors can tour the state-of-the-art facility, meet the firefighters and check out the equipment.

Arlington/Washington DC Metropolitan Area at Top of List of Home Price gains

ClearCapital’s Home Data Index Forecast shows price declines nationally but rising in five major metropolitan areas, including the Washington DC/Arlington/Alexandria area which is at the top of the list. They show an increase in home prices of 4.4% for the first six months of 2011 with a projected increase of 2.4% for the remaining six months of the year.

Come Watch Washington Capitals Prospects at their Summer Development Camp

2011’s Summer Development Camp for Washington Capitals Prospects will be held July 11th-16th at the Kettler Iceplex at Ballston. All on-ice sessions, including the three intrasquad games, are free and open to the public. Capitals prospects who are under contract as well as recent Capitals draft picks who have not been signed yet will be in attendance. The camp will wrap up with a Fan Fest on Saturday, July 16, beginning at 10 AM. The Fan Fest will feature an intrasquad scrimmage as well as the team’ annual equipment sale, interactive games, autographs and public skating.
