Shirlington Branch Library will be showing free family friendly movies every Friday through the end of August at 2:00 PM and Westover Branch Library will be showing movies on select Wednesdays at 4:00 PM. Movies include recent favorites Shrek Forever After, Tangled, How to Train Your Dragon and classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and Alice in Wonderland. 2011 Air Force Cycling Classic is June 11th and 12th
Register to ride or come on out to cheer the riders on. This year’s Air Force Cycling Classic will be Saturday June 11th in Clarendon and Sunday June 12th in Crystal City. Fourteen of the top professional and amateur cycling teams from around the world will be competing in what is considered one of the nation’s premier cycling events. Kids rides will be held both days for children 9 and under and are free. The non-competitive Air Force Challenge Crystal Ride will be held Sunday at 7:30 am and registration is open to riders of all abilities.
For course maps, click this link. Spectators are encouraged to take the Metro as parking in these areas will be limited and many roads will be closed.
Bike DC 2011 is May 22nd
Bike DC, a 20 mile bike ride through Washington and Arlington on car-free streets, highways and parkways will be held Sunday, May 22nd 2011. The ride begins on the National Mall in front of the U. S. Capitol and continues up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House and across the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge/I-66 into Virginia. The route then goes along the George Washington Memorial Parkway and past the Marine Corps Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, the Pentagon and the Air Force Memorial before heading back into DC. The entire ride is on streets closed to motorized traffic.
Neighborhood Day 2011 is May 21st
Saturday, May 21st will mark the 11th annual Neighborhood Day designed to help make Arlingtonians connect with their neighbors. Among the many events scheduled (some of which I mentioned in earlier posts) are the HB Woodlawn 5K at Potomac Overlook Park to benefit H20 for Life, a Walkabout beginning at the Westover Library at 10 and going through the Highland Park/Overlee Knolls neighborhood, Lyon Park’s Spring Fair. the dedication of the new park and playground at Dominion Hills, yard sales in Ashton Heights and the Old Dominion neighborhood, invasive plant pulls in Fairlington and Barcroft, a Turtle Trot 5K to benefit injured turtles and other wildlife at Bluemont, a BBQ for the Bluemont Civic neighborhood from 11:30-1 at Firehouse #2 on Wilson Blvd., a “family affair” themed picnicat the Drew Elementary School field for the Nauck neighborhood, and a ribbon cutting of the new truck themed playground at Bluemont Park.
