The new Penrose Square Giant will be presenting its first Movie Under the Stars on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 at 8PM (rescheduled from 8/27 due to Hurricane Irene)on the Penrose Square at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Barton St. The featured film will be Best Picture Academy Award nominee, The Blind Side. Former Arlingtonian Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her leading role in this movie. Bring your family and a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the show. Parking at the Penrose Square Building will be free! (access from S. Barton St., S. Adams St. and S. 9th St.).
America’s 911 Foundation Annual Motorcyle Ride will travel through Arlington 8/19
America’s 911 Foundation is having their annual motorcycle ride 8/19-20, 2011 to remember and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to raise money for programs that support families of first responders, awarding college scholarships to their children and contributing equipment to emergency responder departments. An estimated 3000 motorcyclists will be traveling along I-66 Eastbound and 110 South on the afternoon of Friday 8/19. These roads will be closed to traffic from 2:30 to 4:00. They will be en route to Pentagon City where they are holding a free concert by Aaron Tippin on Army Navy Drive beside the Pentagon. Visitors to the concert are encouraged to use Metro as there is likely to be traffic congestion in the area. Army Navy Drive will be closed from S. 12th Street to S. Fern Street from 9:30 a.m. to midnight.
Arlington County Public Schools Calendar 2011-2012
Most Arlington County Public School students will start back to school Tuesday, September 6th, 2011. Barcroft Elementary which is a year round school has already begun classes. Elementary School students will get a five day weekend October 6th-10th with parent teacher conferences on the 6th and 7th and the Columbus Day Holiday on the 10th (middle schoolers have Friday the 6th and the 10th off while high schoolers just have the 10th). Winter Break runs from December 23rd through January 2nd with students returning to class on January 3rd. Spring Break begins the weekend of March 31st and runs through Monday, April 9th unless Monday is needed as a make-up day.

Fire Station No. 3 opens
Arlington County has announced that Fire Dept. No. 3 in Cherrydale opened today, July 26th, 2011. The public is invited to a dedication ceremony on Friday July 29th at 2PM where they will have a ceremonial uncoupling of a fire house (serving as a “ribbon-cutting”) and a community open house on Saturday, July 30th from 10-2. when visitors can tour the state-of-the-art facility, meet the firefighters and check out the equipment.
Arlington/Washington DC Metropolitan Area at Top of List of Home Price gains
ClearCapital’s Home Data Index Forecast shows price declines nationally but rising in five major metropolitan areas, including the Washington DC/Arlington/Alexandria area which is at the top of the list. They show an increase in home prices of 4.4% for the first six months of 2011 with a projected increase of 2.4% for the remaining six months of the year.
