This year’s Clarendon Day will again be combined with Virginia Hospital Center’s Family Fun Day for even more fun! Starting at 8:20 AM with a 5K run, a 10K at 9:00 AM, and a kids’ dash at 10:30 AM, and followed by music and dance performances on three stages, over 50 vendors, and food from local restaurants, face painting, games, fitness classes, and health screenings from 11-5. All events will take place around the Clarendon Metro Station.

America’s 911 Foundation is having their annual motorcycle ride 8/19-20, 2011 to remember and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to raise money for programs that support families of first responders, awarding college scholarships to their children and contributing equipment to emergency responder departments. An estimated 3000 motorcyclists will be traveling along I-66 Eastbound and 110 South on the afternoon of Friday 8/19. These roads will be closed to traffic from 2:30 to 4:00. They will be en route to Pentagon City where they are holding a free concert by Aaron Tippin on Army Navy Drive beside the Pentagon. Visitors to the concert are encouraged to use Metro as there is likely to be traffic congestion in the area. Army Navy Drive will be closed from S. 12th Street to S. Fern Street from 9:30 a.m. to midnight.

The third annual Arlington Idol singing competition will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at Kenmore Middle School. Admission is free and open to the public. It will also be broadcast live on Comcast Cable Channel 72 and on the web. Each Arlington public high school selected one singer to participate in the contest and one runner-up to sing back up along with the US Army’s rock band “Downrage.” This year’s finalists are Mary Shields from H-B Woodlawn, Danyele Greenfield from Wakefield High School, Abir Haronni from Washington-Lee High School and Kate Mountain from Yorktown. Runners-up include Kyra Klontz of H-B Woodlawn,Tigist Worku of Wakefield, Mallory McKenzie of Washington-Lee and Rachel Gomberg from Yorktown. You will be able to cast your vote for Arlington Idol via text messaging. The link to watch online will be posted on the Army Band’s website the day of the competition along with voting instructions.
