There are several spots in Arlington where you can see the fireworks on the National Mall. I like Lady Byrd Johnson park although traffic can be bad and parking along the GW Parkway is no longer permitted. Long Bridge Park has been a frequent location for family friendly Fourth of July celebrations. Stay Arlington offers these suggestions for the best places to watch the fireworks in Arlington. What are your favorite spots to watch the 4th of July fireworks?
#81 – Cool off at a Spray Park
When the Summer heat gets to be too much, take the kids to Lyon Village, Hayes Park or Drew Playground Spray Park to cool off. Arlington’s four Spraygrounds and two interactive water parks are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Check the website for hours as each sprayground is closed one day a week.
#74 – Do Something Good for the Environment
Join EcoAction Arlington, formerly Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, and attend events they participate in during the year, including an upcoming Green Living Expo. They sponsor volunteer events such as stream cleanups, invasive plant removals, highway cleanups, and storm drain markings, and educational Green Living events. Special events this year included a Summer Solstice Celebration at Barcroft Park with several service project options as well as a geocaching demonstration, a high tech treasure hunt game where you use a GPS to find a hidden container.
#73 – Run in the Amazon Conservation Team Run for the Rainforest 5K
The annual Amazon Conservation Team Run for the Rainforest 5K at Pentagon Row is typically held the last weekend in June. The race is the first and only charity race in the Washington Metropolitan area that directly benefits rainforest conservation and indigenous community support. In addition, a school supply drive is held in conjunction with the race to collect items needed for children that attend school in the rainforest villages of Suriname and Colombia.
#72 – Attend the Columbia Pike Blues Festival
The Annual Columbia Pike Blues Festival held in June features free live music from national and local artists, lots of food, and a Music Experience Tent where kids can get a mini-lesson in guitar. For 2013 the event will be held June 15th from 1PM to 8 PM on South Walter Reed Drive at Columbia Pike. The lineup for 2013 is below. Check the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization website for more details on this year’s event.

- 2:00p – Clarence “Bluesman” Turner
- 3:30p – Chris Polk
- 5:00p – Cathy Ponton King

#71 – Enjoy Free Concerts al fresco at the Lubber Run Park Amphitheater
Lubber Run Park in Arlington Forest has frequently been the site of many Arlington Arts Al Fresco Events including free outdoor dance, musical and theatrical performances. After a hiatus for a couple of years due to budget cuts the free Summer Concert Series returned to Lubber Run Amphitheater in 2011. Shows usually begin in June and continue on most Friday and Saturday evenings with children’s performances on Sundays through early August. For the complete schedule, visit the Arlington Arts website.
