The outdoor ice skating rink at Pentagon Row is now open daily and will have extended hours on days schools are closed. Lessons are available and you can arrange for birthday parties at the ice rink which includes a 25 minute lesson.
#207 – Come cheer on the runners in the Marine Corps Marathon
The annual Marine Corps Marathon is typically held the last Sunday in October. Come out and cheer them on as they run through Arlington and Washington, DC. There are five locations recommended for spectators.

Opening ceremonies will be held at the MCM Start Line on Route 110 in Arlington accessible on Metro’s blue/orange line at the Rosslyn or Pentagon Station. Metro will open at 5 AM and the race begins at 7:55 AM. After the start you can cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln Memorial in DC where you’ll be able to see runners at mile 11 and mile 16. If you head east on Constitution Avenue, past the Washington Monument to the National Mall you will be in a good position to see the runners at miles 18 and 19. From there take the Metro via the Smithsonian station and head back into Virginia on the Blue or Yellow line to Crystal City where you can see the runners at miles 22 and 23. There will also be live music and family activities. At the finish line near the Marine Corps War Memorial there will be bleacher seating. Take Metro’s blue line to Rosslyn or the MCM shuttle from 23rd Street in Crystal City.
The Marine Corps Marathon Finish Festival is usually held in Rosslyn with a family link up area, music, food samplings and a beer garden.
#195 – Cheer on your favorite Marching Band
Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown High School Marching Bands play at Friday night football games as well as at various competitions through the year, including an APS Marching Band Showcase which will have all three of them performing. This is typically held in October. Check the schools’ websites for specific dates and locations and come out to cheer them on.
#191 – Come to the Superstar Family Fun Day and “Mason Mile” Fun Run
This free community event sponsored by Key School is held rain or shine at the school in mid-October. For 2011, the event will be Saturday October 15th from 9-12. The Superstar Family Fun Day is held in memory of Mason Lynch who lost his battle with cancer. Wear your favorite sports jersey and come out to play sports, participate in a fun run/walk, and enjoy outdoor activities. The Children’s Bloodmobile will also be on site taking blood donations. The event is free, but donations to the Mason Leach Superstar Fund at Children’s National Medical Center and the Key School PTA are welcome.
#190 – Participate in the Freedom Walk
The US FreedomWalk Festival is a three day annual event that features non-competitive walks on ten trails with distances of 3-27 miles. All are welcome. It is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV).
#189 – Go to a high school football game
Yorktown High School’s Homecoming Game is Friday, October 15th at 7:30 and cross-county rivalries are coming up soon. Yorktown plays at Wakefield Friday October 22nd, Wakefield plays at Washington-Lee Friday October 29th,and Yorktown plays at Washington-Lee in their final game Friday November 5th.
