The US FreedomWalk Festival is a three day annual event that features non-competitive walks on ten trails with distances of 3-27 miles. All are welcome. It is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV).
#189 – Go to a high school football game
Yorktown High School’s Homecoming Game is Friday, October 15th at 7:30 and cross-county rivalries are coming up soon. Yorktown plays at Wakefield Friday October 22nd, Wakefield plays at Washington-Lee Friday October 29th,and Yorktown plays at Washington-Lee in their final game Friday November 5th. #188 – Go to beer school
The Washington Wine Academy in Crystal City has regularly scheduled beer courses including one hour introductions and two-three hour theme classes. Check their website for the current class schedule. Of course they also do wine courses,cruises, events and limousine driven winery tours.
#187 – Come to a wine tasting at Best Cellars
Best Cellars wine shop in Clarendon hosts a wine tasting the second Tuesday of every month. This month’s tasting on October 12th features Portuguese wines. The store was founded on the premise that selecting a wine to fit your food or mood should be simple, easy and affordable. Most of their wines are designed for every day and are priced at $15 or less per bottle. They group the wines in eight distinct groupings including fizzy, sweet, big, juicy, fresh, soft, luscious and smooth. They also may include higher priced wines that are particularly good values.
Artisphere is coming to Arlington
Arlington’s Artisphere, an exciting new art space with three galleries, three theatres, a 3000 sq. ft. ballroom, and an outdoor terrace, is opening this weekend in the space formerly housing the Newseum before it moved into DC. Beginning with a preview opening gala on Friday, October 8th with music, dance, theatre, hula hoops, and a special cabaret performance by Signature Theatre. Tickets are $250 and are available online.
On Friday evening, October 9th, the arts center will be having a Kickoff Bash, Burst @ Artisphere, hosted by arts impresario Phillipa Hughes’ Pink Line Project and Brightest Young Things. A variety of performance artists will be on hand including balloon art, an art exhibit about skateboarding, music, free beer and wine and more. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online.
The official opening is 10-10-10 from 10am to 11 pm with a free open house followed by another free open house Monday the 11th from 11 to 11.
And Tuesday, October 12th is the start of weekly Salsa Tuesdays featuring regional and national bands with classes in the new ballroom beginning at 7:30 and a concert at 8:30.

#186 – Enjoy the Fall Foliage
You don’t have to take a day trip to Skyline Drive to enjoy beautiful fall colors. We have plenty of mature maples, oaks and hickories right here in Arlington which turn brilliant red, orange and golden in the Fall. Take a leisurely drive through the residential neighborhoods, take a picnic to your local park, or hike the trails at Potomac Overlook and enjoy the colors.
