#218 – Come to Catsino Night.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington is hosting a  “Catsino Night and Silent Auction” on Saturday, November 13th, 2010 in the historic lobby of Reagan National Airport.  The annual event will include Casino-style Gambling, a Silent Auction,
Live Music, an Hors D’Oeuvres Reception catered by Lebanese Taverna, and a Wine, Beer & Martini Bar.

Veteran’s Day Information

Veteran’s Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a National Ceremony to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.  The ceremony begins at 11:00 am with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier followed by a parade of colors and remarks from dignitaries at the Memorial Amphitheatre.  Arrive early as parking is limited and you need to take a shuttle bus to the tomb/amphitheater.   There will be a prelude concert inside the amphitheatre at 10:30 by The United States Air Force Band.  For more information, visit the Arlington National Cemetery website.

You can also honor America’s Veterans by visiting battlefields and military parks preserved in the National Park System and November 11th is an entrance fee free day to all National Parks.  Due to the rich history in our area, there are many nearby.  For more information, visit the link here.

Arlington will also be holding aWomen’s Memorial Veterans Day program on November 11th at 3 PM. The ceremony at the Memorial for Women in Military Service , is free and open to the public and will include formal military honors, a keynote address, veterans’ remarks, and a wreath laying.

Have you seen the new Karate Kid movie?  Do Jackie Chan and  Jaden Smith inspire you to want to learn martial arts?  Jhoon Rhee Tai Kwon Do at Lee Harrison shopping center offers classes for knee-high ninjas all the way up to adults as well as a kardio kickboxing class.

Shoefly at 2727 Wilson Boulevard in Clarendon gets great reviews from its customers for “hip and funky” shoes. A previous winner from Washington Post Express for best indie shoe store, Shoefly has been nominated for an ABBIE award for Best Boutique.

NOTE:  Shoefly is closed.

#214 – Get Cupcakes and Other Sweet Treats at Bakeshop

You no longer have to go to Georgetown to get great cupcakes. Bakeshop on Fillmore Street, nominated for an ABBIE award for Best Dessert, offers Red Velvet and other assorted cupcakes, cookies, layer cakes and even vegan treats.
