#267 – Get Cupcakes at Crumbs Bake Shop

Crumbs Bake Shop just opened its doors today, December 30th, at 2839 Clarendon Boulevard (Market Common).  They are open daily beginning at 7am M-F and 9am Saturday and Sunday.  According to their website, this bake shop which originated in Manhattan, offers “an irresistable blend of comfort-oriented classics and elegant baked goods, but the specialty of the house is the Crumbs Signature size cupcakes! With our more than 50 varieties baked fresh daily and a new cupcake of the week every Monday, each Crumbs Bake Shop is an oasis of wall to wall deliciousness.”  They offer both signature size and taste size cupcakes as well as cakes and cookies.  Their cupcake of the month?  Peppermint Hot Cocoa. 

#266 – Join in the Ladies’ Night Run/Walk (Ladies Only)

Every Thursday evening at 6:30, Potomac River Running holds a women’s only group run & walk in Arlington.  This low-key group run/walk begins at the Arlington Potomac River Running Store at 3924 Wilson Blvd. and will cover between 2 and 5 miles and be appropriate for women of all paces and experience levels.  Prizes and rewards will be given to participants achieving various targets.

If you are a man and feeling left out, =PR= also holds a Monday night run at 6:30 for all-comers and all paces.

Potomac River Running also offers training programs and a full service store of running apparel, footwear and accessories.

#265 – Make your New Year’s Eve Plans

Looking for someplace special to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Arlington?  A planned event at the Artisphere has been cancelled, but there are plenty of other options for you if you decide to get out and celebrate.

Arlington Cinema ‘N Drafthouse  will be holding a 1980’s style New Year’s Eve Celebration December 31st, 2010 from 7:30 – 1:30.  $14 admission (21 and over only) covers DJ, Entertainment and party favors. They will watch the ball drop in NYC on the big movie screen. Food and drinks are available for separate purchase.  It is recommended you buy tickets in advance as they sold out last year.

Clarendon Ballroom will be having its annual New Year’s Eve Celebration from 8 PM-2AM. Liquid A is performing on the main stage while DJ Image is spinning in the lower lounge.  Admission price (currently $85 but may increase as it gets closer to New Year’s Eve) includes entertainment, 4 drink tickets, a dinner buffet, party favors, a balloon drop and midnight toast.

Clarendon Grill is holding a New Year’s Eve celebration with entertainment by the popular Gonzo’s Nose.  The ticket price (currently $65 but scheduled to go up) includes 3 drink tickets, hors d’ouevres, party favors, and a champagne toast at midnight.  The patio will be open and heated.

The Positive Black Men’s Coalition is having its Annual New Year’s Eve Gala featuring Roy Ayers, Soul Patrol and a Hand Dance Contest at the  Hyatt Regency Crystal City.

Many restaurants are offering special meals for New Year’s.  Check Open Table for area restaurants with availability.  Arlington restaurants with special menus planned include:

Lebanese Taverna at Pentagon Row will offer family friendly dining and children’s entertainment from 5-7PM.  Starting At 9PM, they will be serving Lebanese Style “Dim Sum” With Over 20 Dishes, Champagne Toast, Party Favors & a Belly Dancing Show.

Grand Cru Wine Bar & Bistro will offer a prix fixe wine paired menu.

Jaleo Crystal City is offering an a la carte menu at their first Seating from 5 – 8:30PM.  The 2nd Seating begins at 9PM and includes endless tapas, DJ, Cava Toast and  The 12 Grapes Tradition (a Spanish New Year’s tradition where you eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds).  The cost is $85 Per Person.

Piola is offering a family-friendly early seating from 5:30-7 with a 3 course menu for $25/person.  The main event seating begins at 9 PM with a four course menu for $45/person with live DJ, dancing, champagne and a party favor.

The Melting Pot is offering a four course set menu for $68 per person.

Metro will operate until 3 a.m. both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with trains running on a less-frequent Sunday schedule.  And once again, SoberRide will be offering free taxi rides (up to $30 fare) to anyone 21 or older who needs a ride home.  Call 800/200-TAXI when you are ready to leave and expect to wait 30-45 minutes. #264 -Warm up with Coffee at The Java Shack


Thanks to GoRemy’s Arlington Rap, we know that Arlington has a Starbuck’s on nearly every corner, but what about the independent coffee shops? The Java Shack at 2507 N. Franklin Street in the Courthouse neighborhood prides itself in being a community gathering spot. The Java Shack was dubbed “The Cheers Coffeehouse” because they take the time to know their customers’ names, drinks and sometimes their lives.

#263 – Go Mall Walking

Eat too much figgy pudding?  Too windy and cold for outdoor exercises?  Try Mall Walking.  You can go on your own, or join Ballston’s Commonwalk Mall Walker’s Club which meets at the food court every Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 8 AM.  There is a cool-down and stretching session at 9:15 led by Virginia Hospital Center staff.

Come to The Front Page in the Ballston area of Arlington where they show every away Capitals game (including one tonight, 12/26, against the Hurricanes) on all 13 HD TVs with $2 Bud Lights during the game.  Sunday is also Prime Rib night.  Check their website for other daily specials.

#260 – Attend a Benefit for the Planetarium

There will be a Benefit for the Arlington Planetarium at the newly renovated IOTA Club & Cafe in Clarendon on Sunday, December 26 at 8PM.  You must be 21 or older and they are requesting a minimum $10 donation.  Musical performances include J.P. Reali, The Mantis, Robinson Lee Earle, The Last Monarchs and Lost Civilizations experimental music project.

The Friends of the Planetarium has also launched a 10-day challenge to try to raise $20,000 for the David M. Brown Planetarium which is being threatened with closure if enough funds cannot be raised to support it.  Please donate or make a pledge and spread the word.  The challenge ends New Years Eve.

In addition, Night at the Planetarium Part 3 will be held on December 29th from 4-9PM.  Be sure and visit the Planetarium website for more information.
