You can pick up your camping gear, scout uniforms, or other outdoor specialty items at Casual Adventure, a locally owned store on Washington Blvd. in the Clarendon/Virginia Square area that has been in operation since 1955. Their Columbus day sale runs through October 17th with some items 20-40% off.
Casual Adventure also accepts donations of warm clothing, footwear, gear and accessories for ASPAN, the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network.
#192 – Watch the Redskins game at Bailey’s Sports Grille

Located at Ballston Common Mall and Crystal City, Bailey’s offers happy hour prices until 9 PM Sundays. The Skins play the Colts on October 17th at 8:20 PM. This month Bailey’s is also raising money for St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital and will be holding a a fundraiser on October 15th and a Silent Auction/Halloween Party on October 29th.
#191 – Come to the Superstar Family Fun Day and “Mason Mile” Fun Run

This free community event sponsored by Key School is held rain or shine at the school in mid-October. For 2011, the event will be Saturday October 15th from 9-12. The Superstar Family Fun Day is held in memory of Mason Lynch who lost his battle with cancer. Wear your favorite sports jersey and come out to play sports, participate in a fun run/walk, and enjoy outdoor activities. The Children’s Bloodmobile will also be on site taking blood donations. The event is free, but donations to the Mason Leach Superstar Fund at Children’s National Medical Center and the Key School PTA are welcome. For more information, click this link.

The US FreedomWalk Festival is a three day annual event that features non-competitive walks on ten trails with distances of 3-27 miles. All are welcome. It is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV). For 2012, the event will be held in Arlington from October 19th-21st.

Yorktown High School’s Homecoming Game is Friday, October 15th at 7:30 and cross-county rivalries are coming up soon. Yorktown plays at Wakefield Friday October 22nd, Wakefield plays at Washington-Lee Friday October 29th,and Yorktown plays at Washington-Lee in their final game Friday November 5th. The Washington Wine Academy in Crystal City has regularly scheduled beer courses including one hour introductions and two-three hour theme classes. Check their website for the current class schedule. Of course they also do wine courses,cruises, events and limousine driven winery tours.

Best Cellars wine shop in Clarendon hosts a wine tasting the second Tuesday of every month. This month’s tasting on October 12th features Portuguese wines. The store was founded on the premise that selecting a wine to fit your food or mood should be simple, easy and affordable. Most of their wines are designed for every day and are priced at $15 or less per bottle. They group the wines in eight distinct groupings including fizzy, sweet, big, juicy, fresh, soft, luscious and smooth. They also may include higher priced wines that are particularly good values.

We have plenty of mature maples, oaks and hickories right here in Arlington which turn brilliant red, orange and golden in the Fall. Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe is a unique German bakery and delicatessen located on Lee Highway. To celebrate Oktoberfest, they offer a special Oktoberfest meal, a Big Bavarian pretzel sandwich, and wurst by the pound. It’s great the rest of the year, too, for pies, cakes, pastries and breads as well as deli items.
