Light Up Rosslyn 2011 scheduled for 12/1

Come to Rosslyn on Thursday December 1st for the 18th annual Light Up Rosslyn from 5:15-6:30.  News anchor Morris Jones will be on hand along with members of the Arlington County Board and A-Span (Arlington’s Street People Assistance Network) to flip the switch and light up Rosslyn’s skyline.  There will be live music and refreshments at this free event at the WJLA Jumbo Tron (1100 Wilson Blvd.).  In addition, there will be a Winter Clothing Collection for A-Span which needs winter coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, socks, and jeans.

 

The Paw-Liday Gift Market is November 12, 2011

Do some holiday shopping and support a good cause on November 12th, 2011 from 10-4 at the Lyon Park Community Center, 414 North Fillmore Street.  Homeward Trails Animal Rescue’s Paw-liday Gift Market will offer a variety of products from artists, crafters, and vendors of jewelry, decoupage, fabric crafts, personalized stationary, embroidered items, custom pet tags, pet product, gifts from around the world and more. Proceeds from the event will help Homeward Trails bring more dogs and cats to loving homes for the holidays.

Shirlington Hosts An Oktoberfest October 8th, 2011

Northern Virginia’s Largest Oktoberfest Beer Festival is coming to Shirlington on Saturday, October 8th from 12-7 PM.   More than 40 breweries will be giving out 4 oz samples. There will also be local food vendors, an authentic German band and authentic Oktoberfest foodTickets are $25 if you plan to sample the beer, but if not, it is free.

2011 Clarendon Day is Saturday, September 24th – Rain or Shine!

This year’s Clarendon Day will again be combined with Virginia Hospital Center’s Family Fun Day for even more fun!   Starting at 8:20 AM with a 5K run, a 10K at 9:00 AM, and a kids’ dash at 10:30 AM, and followed by music and dance performances on three stages, over 50 vendors, and food from local restaurants, face painting, games, fitness classes,  and health screenings from 11-5.  All events will take place around the Clarendon Metro Station.

The new Penrose Square Giant will be presenting its first Movie Under the Stars on Saturday, September 17th at 8PM (rescheduled from 8/27 due to Hurricane Irene)on the Penrose Square at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Barton St.  The featured film will be Best Picture Academy Award nominee, The Blind Side. Former Arlingtonian Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her leading role in this movie.  Bring your family and a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the show.  Parking at the Penrose Square Building will be free! America’s 911 Foundation Annual Motorcyle Ride will travel through Arlington 8/19

 

911 foundation memorial rideAmerica’s 911 Foundation is having their annual  motorcycle ride 8/19-20 to remember and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to raise money for programs that support families of first responders, awarding college scholarships to their children and contributing equipment to emergency responder departments.  An estimated 3000 motorcyclists will be traveling along I-66 Eastbound and 110 South on the afternoon of Friday 8/19.  These roads will be closed to traffic from 2:30 to 4:00.  They will be en route to Pentagon City where they are holding a free concert by Aaron Tippin on Army Navy Drive beside the Pentagon. Visitors to the concert are encouraged to use Metro as there is likely to be traffic congestion in the area.  Army Navy Drive will be closed from S. 12th Street to S. Fern Street from 9:30 a.m. to midnight.

Arlington County has announced that Fire Dept. No. 3 in Cherrydale opened today, July 26th, 2011. The public is invited to a dedication ceremony on Friday July 29th at 2PM where they will have a ceremonial uncoupling of a fire house (serving as a “ribbon-cutting”) and a community open house on Saturday, July 30th from 10-2. when visitors can tour the state-of-the-art facility, meet the firefighters and check out the equipment. Come Watch Washington Capitals Prospects at their Summer Development Camp

2011′s Summer Development Camp for Washington Capitals Prospects will be held July 11th-16th at the Kettler Iceplex at Ballston. All on-ice sessions, including the three intrasquad games, are free and open to the public.  Capitals prospects who are under contract as well as recent Capitals draft picks who have not been signed yet will be in attendance.  The camp will wrap up with a Fan Fest on  Saturday, July 16, beginning at 10 AM.  The Fan Fest is a will  feature an intrasquad scrimmage as well as the team’ annual equipment sale, interactive games, autographs and public skating.
